$1 billion has now been committed to a rocket that has never reached orbit. Stoke Space closed an initial Series E tranche on September 8, lifting total capital raised to $2.3 billion and pushing its first orbital launch target to early 2027.

Fully reusable launch has become a capital race as much as a technical one. About $2.1 billion of its funding has arrived since January 2025, and Nova has not flown.

The company is betting a liquid-hydrogen-cooled metallic heat shield, rated for 100 reuses, reaches a cost floor that partially reusable rockets cannot.

The first commercial unlock is national security launch. Nova must fly successfully before it can compete for Space Force task orders.

The round was co-led by Point72 Ventures and Spark Capital, with General Innovation, Glade Brook Capital, US Innovation Technology, Washington Harbour Partners, Woven Capital and Y Combinator participating. It did not disclose a valuation.

Capital has run ahead of the hardware before in this market, though rarely by this margin. Rocket Lab had raised about $148 million when it closed its Series D in March 2017. Its Electron rocket reached orbit the following January.

The company has raised roughly $2.1 billion since January 2025. That covers a $260 million Series C, a $510 million Series D, a $350 million extension to that round, and the initial Series E. None of it has bought a completed orbital mission yet.

The vehicle is where the money is meant to show up. Nova Pathfinder carries a liquid-hydrogen-cooled metallic heat shield that it says will support 100 reuses. In a fully reusable configuration it is designed to lift 3,000 kilograms to low Earth orbit (LEO). Expended, that figure rises to 7,000 kilograms.

Testing scaled up while the rocket waited

Hardware work continued in parallel with fundraising. The company wrapped proto-qualification of Pathfinder's first stage in June, running it through 46 structural tests at its Moses Lake facility in Washington state. The test site is expanding from 75 acres to 550 acres to support both Pathfinder and the larger vehicle.

The company is also finishing a rebuild of Launch Complex 14 at Cape Canaveral, the pad that sent John Glenn to orbit in 1962. The concrete is nearly ready. What it lacks is a rocket.

Hardware is the constraint.

The historical contrast is the point. Rocket Lab reached orbit on a fraction of the capital. It is attempting a harder problem. Its heat shield must survive reentry repeatedly, and its upper stage must return as well, not only the booster.

The Series E also funds a second vehicle. Nova Block 2 will deliver 15 metric tons to LEO inside a 5-meter payload fairing, with a first launch targeted for 2029. The design has been in development in parallel for years, the company says, rather than drawn up for the announcement.

What changes with the larger Nova Block 2?

Block 2 uses 14 Zenith engines on its first stage, double the seven on Pathfinder. Its upper stage replaces shared turbopumps with 12 independent engines, which it says lets the stage keep flying if one fails.

The first customer is the government

It joined the Space Force's National Security Space Launch (NSSL) Phase 3 Lane 1 pool in March 2025. Inclusion reserves a place, not a contract. The company cannot compete for task orders until Nova flies successfully. In July, the Space Force tripled the Lane 1 ceiling to $17 billion, expanding the program to roughly 170 expected missions.

What does it take to win a task order?

NSSL Lane 1 orders require a flight-proven vehicle. Its March 2025 inclusion reserved its place in the pool. A successful Nova Pathfinder launch converts that place into eligibility, not a guaranteed award.

The turning points that matter

The first is clean orbital insertion. Nova Pathfinder is designed to carry payloads to orbit while proving the core architecture. A successful debut converts that place into bidding rights and gives customers a second fully reusable option beyond the incumbent.

The second is reflight. It plans multiple Pathfinder missions through 2027 and 2028, building flight data while Nova Block 2 takes shape. A heat shield rated for 100 reuses means little until the same hardware flies twice.

What the raise actually prices

The round is a wager on cost curves, not schedules. Point72 and Spark Capital both backed it at its 2021 Series A and returned for every round since. Their conviction rests on the view that reuse, rather than cadence, decides who wins the next decade of launch. The argument is that a fully reusable stack reaches a cost floor that a reusable booster alone cannot.

The schedule has already moved once. Pathfinder slipped from late 2026 to early 2027, and the company's own roadmap now stretches multiple test flights across two years. As we wrote in September, satellite manufacturers are racing to catch constellation demand. Each of those satellites still needs a ride, and the supply of proven, reusable lift remains thin.

Whether the capital arrived early or simply arrived patient is now a question of test cadence. It has the money, the pad, and the launch window. The next eighteen months decide what the $2.3 billion bought.
