The Marine Corps just signed its first production contract for fully autonomous ground vehicles. The company holding it is Overland AI, a Seattle startup founded in 2022 by robotics researchers drawn from the University of Washington.
The deal is worth roughly $20 million. Under it, Overland AI will deliver about a dozen autonomous ground vehicles to support Marine Air Defense Integrated System units, the mobile counter-drone batteries the Corps fields to shoot down hostile drones and low-flying aircraft.
Why the Marine Corps bought autonomy
An air-defense battery needs ammunition, fuel and spares delivered while it stays in position. Today that run is made by a Marine driving a supply vehicle into the same airspace the battery is defending. Overland AI's vehicles make the run without a person behind the wheel. They perceive the terrain with onboard sensors, plan a route and move without GPS, without pre-mapped paths and without an always-on radio link.
The Corps keeps its Joint Light Tactical Vehicles in place. The autonomous unit starts as resupply and grows from there. One operator can task a whole fleet instead of steering each vehicle on its own, and that is the part that changes the economics of ground logistics.
Deliveries begin about nine months after the award, meaning early 2027. ULTRA, the vehicle Overland AI builds in-house, weighs 2,500 pounds and carries a 1,000-pound payload. Beyond the hardware, the deal covers OverDrive, the autonomy stack, and OverWatch, the command-and-control interface, plus spares and services.

The first among peers
This is the first time a ground-autonomy company has held a prime production contract with the U.S. military. Until recently, unmanned ground systems were tele-operated and remote-controlled, with each vehicle needing its own operator and a working link to the base. Autonomy breaks both constraints, and it changes the customer relationship: the startup now holds a contract directly with the government instead of entering through a larger integrator.
The path matters as much as the prize. The deal ran through APFIT, the Pentagon's program for pushing proven prototypes into production on a compressed schedule. Three years ago Overland AI was a DARPA-born research project. Its stack already runs on General Dynamics' Small Multipurpose Equipment Transport, on Army vehicles in the 18th Airborne Corps, and on Textron's Ripsaw M5 platform. As we wrote in August, magnetic navigation is becoming the fallback layer for autonomous fleets when GPS goes dark, and contested navigation is exactly the environment these vehicles are built for.
The $20 million is small next to what the order represents. Ground autonomy has cleared the gate that separates experimental programs from programs of record, and the next round of capital in this segment will be raised against production contracts, not prototypes.
The same pattern is playing out across the wider robotics market, and the Pentagon's own follow-on rounds back it up. Analysts at PitchBook have described manufacturing scale as the next competitive battleground for defense technology, the point where a startup with a production line can separate itself from companies holding demos. Overland AI is now the reference transaction on the ground side of that shift.
Autonomy reached the production stage through a $20 million order. The next decade of ground robotics will be decided by who converts prototypes into fielded fleets at scale.
