What does it take for a startup with roughly sixty people to equip a NATO army with robots? ARX Robotics, a Munich-based dual-use robotics company, is betting it already has the answer, and three armies are now putting that bet to the test.
The prize is the ground-robotics prime slot: the company that owns logistics, surveillance, and casualty evacuation for dismounted forces across NATO.
The open question is whether a startup can hold that slot against incumbents like Rheinmetall and the weight of national procurement.
The GEREON platform is deliberately unglamorous. A modular uncrewed ground vehicle (UGV) built to carry up to 500 kg, it performs logistics, casualty evacuation, and surveillance rather than firing shots. That is the point. ARX designed it to add capability without adding burden to highly mobile forces.
From two prototypes to a deployed fleet
In January 2024 the German Army took delivery of its first two GEREON variants. Eight months later the platform was running inside a live NATO exercise on the alliance's eastern flank.
During Grand Eagle II in Lithuania, parts of the Bundeswehr's GEREON uncrewed ground systems (UGS) fleet carried out surveillance, autonomous resupply, and casualty evacuation missions. The exercise marked the first deployment of unmanned systems in the smaller weight class, with GEREON 3 units fitted with ground radars, elevated reconnaissance optics, and Starlink communication modules.
ARX frames this as proof of a thesis: small, attritable, software-defined robots beat bespoke military platforms on delivery speed. The company has raised $60.2 million to date, including a 9 million euro seed round led by the NATO Innovation Fund in 2024, at the time the largest European DefenceTech seed on record.
Three armies, one platform
ARX is now operating across three distinct market tiers at once. That breadth is unusual for a company its size, and it is the core of the investment case.

In April 2026 the British Army awarded ARX a contract through Task Force Rapstone to deliver UK-manufactured GEREON vehicles with intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) payloads for recce-strike experimentation. ARX has invested in UK production capacity it says can build up to 1,800 robotic vehicles a year.
"The British Army's adoption of autonomous ground systems is a clear signal that the UK is serious about modernising its land forces," said David Roberts, chief executive of ARX Robotics UK.
Ukraine is the third tier, and the most demanding. A new contract in May 2026 expanded the country's GEREON fleet fivefold, adding several hundred vehicles. ARX is now the largest Western supplier of uncrewed ground vehicles to Ukrainian forces, as Kyiv targets 25,000 ground robots in the first half of 2026 alone.
The promised-versus-reality gap
Every robotics startup sells the same demo. ARX's edge is combat feedback it cannot get in a peacetime lab.
Vehicles operating daily under Russian drones and artillery generate failure data and user feedback that competitors in stable markets never see. That loop is why ARX, not a legacy prime, became the supplier feeding Ukraine's logistics push.

Still, the promised-versus-reality gap is real. A fleet of several hundred is not a programme of record. National armies buy through primes, and ARX remains a component supplier inside someone else's framework unless it wins a standing contract of its own.
The autonomy layer underneath
The robots get the headlines. The software is the moat.
ARX bundles its vehicles on Mithra OS, a fleet-wide autonomy layer that connects sensors, autonomous functions, and open interfaces across every platform. The point is coordination: many small robots acting as one system, not one expensive robot acting alone. That is what lets a logistics vehicle, a surveillance unit, and a casualty-evacuation (CASEVAC) platform share one mission picture.
The payload architecture reinforces it. GEREON uses click-and-go modules, so the same chassis shifts from resupply to reconnaissance to medical evacuation without structural change. A unit reconfigures in the field as the mission changes, which is the difference between a demo and a deployable system.
ARX is also widening the family. In December 2025 it unveiled Hector, an optionally manned, software-defined UGV built for higher speed and standoff range. In April 2026 it signed a teaming agreement with Supacat, a British mobility specialist, extending the supply chain beyond Germany and Ukraine.
None of this is novel in isolation. What is unusual is the combination: a combat-proven fleet, a software layer, and a modular payload standard, all owned by one company small enough to move in months. That is the profile Overland AI used to win its U.S. prime slot, and it is the profile ARX is now running in Europe.
The prime-slot contest
This is where the race gets interesting. As we wrote in August, Overland AI became the first ground-autonomy prime for the U.S. military, a structural win that reframes what a prime can be. ARX is chasing the European version of that slot.
It is not alone. American Rheinmetall won the U.S. Army's Project Sustainment award for autonomous logistics UGVs earlier this month. Quantum Systems, ARX's partner in the UXS Alliance, is scaling reconnaissance drones into a broader autonomous-systems platform. The ground-robotics prime slot is contested by startups and incumbents together.
