🎯

Science Corporation's PRIMA retinal implant received CE mark approval. It is the first brain-computer interface (BCI) device to restore functional central vision in patients with geographic atrophy (GA) due to age-related macular degeneration (AMD).

The device is now commercially available across 30 European countries, with the first surgical implantation expected in Germany in September 2026.

Clinical trial results published in the New England Journal of Medicine showed 84% of patients regained the ability to read letters, numbers, and words.

Age-related macular degeneration affects more than five million people globally. The macula, the central part of the retina responsible for reading, facial recognition, and detailed vision, progressively deteriorates and leaves patients with a blind spot at the center of their visual field. Until now, there was no treatment that could restore what was lost.

Science Corporation, a clinical-stage neurotechnology company founded by former Neuralink president Max Hodak, has changed that calculus. On July 22, 2026, the company announced that its PRIMA subretinal photovoltaic implant received CE mark certification under the European Union Medical Device Regulation from DEKRA, authorizing commercial sales across the European Economic Area.

📊

**Key signals to track**

First commercial implantation in Germany. September 2026 is the real-world adoption signal.

FDA breakthrough device and humanitarian use device designations. US market access pathway is active.

Reimbursement negotiations with European healthcare providers. Pricing and coverage terms determine addressable market.

Second-generation PRIMA chip and AR-glasses form factor. The technology roadmap extends well beyond the current device.

## The Clinical Evidence Behind PRIMA

The PRIMAvera multicenter clinical trial enrolled 38 patients across 17 sites in five countries. Results published in the New England Journal of Medicine demonstrated a mean improvement of 25.5 ETDRS letters, equivalent to more than five lines on a standard visual acuity chart, at 12 months. Eighty percent of patients achieved at least a 0.2 logMAR improvement. Critically, the implant was placed beneath the atrophic macula without reducing patients' residual peripheral natural vision.

The PRIMA system consists of an ultra-thin 2×2 mm wireless subretinal implant paired with specialized glasses. The glasses project near-infrared light onto the implant, which converts it into electrical stimulation signals that activate surviving bipolar cells in the retina. A zoom-in feature allows patients to magnify text. One patient finished a 300-page novel after receiving the implant.

## Market Context and Competitive Position

Science Corporation closed a $230 million Series C in March 2026 at a $1.5 billion post-money valuation to fund PRIMA's commercialization and expand clinical trials into additional indications. The round signals that institutional investors see BCIs as an investable category beyond research-stage curiosity.

PRIMA operates in a sparse competitive field. Pixium Vision, the French company that originally developed the technology, transferred the intellectual property to Science Corporation in 2024\. Neuralink, where Hodak was a co-founder before leaving in 2021, is pursuing a different technical approach, intracortical electrodes for broader applications, and remains in the clinical-trial phase. Second Sight Medical Products' Argus II, the only other commercially approved retinal implant, was discontinued in 2022\. No other device has demonstrated restoration of functional central vision in a peer-reviewed, multicenter trial.

The addressable market is large and growing. AMD-associated GA affects more than 5 million people globally, with prevalence rising as populations age. Currently, no pharmacological treatment exists that can restore lost photoreceptors. The standard of care is limited to slowing disease progression via anti-VEGF injections or complement inhibitors.

#### The technology: how a photovoltaic retinal implant works

PRIMA is a photovoltaic subretinal implant. Unlike traditional retinal prosthetics that require transcutaneous wiring for power, PRIMA receives energy and data via near-infrared light projected from the glasses. This eliminates the need for external batteries or percutaneous connectors, which were historically a major source of infection and mechanical failure in implantable devices. Each pixel in the implant independently converts incoming light into electrical current, stimulating the retina's bipolar cell layer. The system delivers a pixelated but functional central visual field, sufficient for reading large print, recognizing faces, and navigating unfamiliar environments.

## Commercial Path and Reimbursement

The CE mark opens the regulatory gateway but does not guarantee commercial success. Science Corporation has begun country-specific reimbursement applications and clinical site activations across Europe. The first commercial implantation is expected in Germany, where the PRIMAvera clinical trial was conducted. Reimbursement negotiations with healthcare providers will determine the device's real-world addressable market. PRIMA is a surgical implant requiring specialized ophthalmic surgeons and specific patient selection criteria.

In the United States, PRIMA has received both Breakthrough Device designation and Humanitarian Use Device designation from the FDA. These are early-stage regulatory signals that establish a pathway toward US market access, but the FDA has not yet set a timeline for review or approval. The company has launched a patient registry for macular degeneration in preparation for the US submission.

Hodak has been explicit about the business target: "The thing that the space needs is a company making $100 million a year of revenue." European commercial launch, combined with US regulatory progress, forms the two-part strategy to hit that threshold.

### What happens to the BCI vision market a year from now?

🔮

**PRIMA will set the first real-world revenue benchmark for a commercial BCI device by Q4 2027.**

Probability: 70%. European adoption in Germany plus 2-3 additional countries, combined with US FDA timeline clarity, will produce enough claims data to estimate annualized revenue trajectory.

#### ✅ Arguments for

\+ CE mark opens a defined regulatory pathway. 30-country addressable market with no direct competitor.

\+ $230M Series C provides multi-year runway for commercialization and US submission

\+ NEJM publication provides clinical credibility for reimbursement negotiations

**Confirmation criteria:** First 100 commercial implants within 12 months of German launch

#### ❌ Arguments against

− Reimbursement timelines in European health systems can stretch 18–36 months beyond regulatory approval

− The 38-patient trial sample size is small. Real-world complication rates may differ from the pivotal study.

− FDA has not committed to a review timeline. The US pathway is years, not months.

**Disconfirmation criteria:** No commercial revenue generated within 18 months of CE mark

### Development scenarios

#### 🟢 Optimistic scenario (25%)

Germany, France, and the UK adopt PRIMA within 18 months. FDA approves via Humanitarian Device Exemption pathway in 2027\. Second-generation chip with higher resolution reaches trials. Revenue trajectory approaches $100M annualized by late 2028.

**Implications:** Validates BCI as a commercial medical device category, triggers M&A interest from larger medtech firms.

#### 🟡 Base-case scenario (55%)

Germany launches on schedule in September 2026\. Two additional EU countries adopt within 2027\. Reimbursement covers PRIMA but at negotiated rates below private-payer expectations. FDA review begins in 2027 with approval in 2028\. Revenue reaches $30-50M by end of 2028, enough to sustain operations but short of the $100M benchmark.

**Implications:** Science Corporation remains independent but must raise additional capital before next-generation product cycle.

#### 🔴 Pessimistic scenario (20%)

Reimbursement negotiations stall in key European markets. US FDA requires an additional clinical trial, pushing US market entry to 2029\. Surgical complication rates in a wider patient population exceed trial rates. Runway pressure forces a down-round or distressed sale.

**Implications:** Delays BCI commercialization timeline sector-wide. Investors reprice the category risk.

## What This Means for the BCI Sector

PRIMA's CE mark matters beyond Science Corporation as a company. It is the first time a BCI device for sensory restoration has crossed the regulatory-commercial threshold in a major market. Every BCI company from Neuralink to Synchron to Precision Neuro now has a reference point for regulatory pathway, clinical evidence standards, and commercial timeline expectations.

Hodak's $100 million revenue target functions as a benchmark for the entire space. If Science Corporation reaches it, the BCI investment thesis shifts from "promising technology" to "viable category." If it falls short, the capital reallocation signal will be equally clear.
