- Description: CSG's $434 million stake in MDA Space makes the Czech ammunition group the Canadian satellite maker's largest single shareholder. It is a small position with a large signal: European defence capital is buying its way into orbit, one option at a time.

$434 million for 9.5% of Canada's largest space company. The buyer is a Czech ammunition maker that had never owned a satellite business.

CSG's stake in MDA Space, confirmed on 13 October, makes the Prague-based defence group the Brampton, Ontario company's largest single shareholder. MDA builds communications satellites, space robotics and geointelligence systems. It also just posted a 34% revenue jump and a CAD 4 billion backlog.

The position is a minority one, and no board control has been disclosed. Its signal is larger than its size.

## CSG's anchor position

CSG is not a household name outside defence procurement. It owns Tatra trucks, the ammunition brands Federal and Remington, and the radar makers Eldis and Retia. Revenue guided at €7.4–7.6 billion for 2026 places it among Europe's larger defence groups. In January its shares began trading on Euronext Amsterdam.

What it did not own was a space business. Buying into MDA gives it one, plus access to a supplier with LEO constellation programs and government customers on three continents.

## Fifty-five years, two years of deals

MDA's history runs from the Canadarm on the Space Shuttle to Canadarm3 for the lunar Gateway. More than 450 missions over 55 years, and roughly 4,000 employees.

The last two years turned that heritage into scale. Satellite Systems revenue rose 44% in the second quarter, to CAD 336 million. Robotics added CAD 100 million, geointelligence CAD 63 million. Net income reached CAD 51.8 million. Book-to-bill landed at 1.6x.

Two acquisitions widened the base. Blue Canyon Technologies, a U.S. spacecraft-component maker, cost $874 million in June. A majority stake in France's CLS, an Earth-observation data business, followed in July at $920 million. CLS brings roughly €286 million of annual revenue and 14,000 customers across about 150 countries.

Add both and MDA's pro-forma 2026 revenue lands near CAD 2.5 billion, with management guiding to roughly 50% growth into 2027\. A new high-volume satellite factory in Montreal has doubled its manufacturing floor space.

## Why a defence group wants a satellite maker

Sovereign capability is the through-line. Governments want communications and observation satellites they control, and they want the factories that build them inside their own alliance. Europe's defence budgets are climbing. Its space industrial base is thin.

CSG says it will explore joint manufacturing and assembly capacity in Europe, and possible joint acquisitions. It already holds a minority position in North Vector Dynamics, a Canadian air-defence firm. MDA becomes the second Canadian asset in its portfolio, and the first with hardware in orbit.

As we wrote in [Europe's $10.5B defence tech boom and the exit gap underneath it](https://nexi.fund/state-of-defence-tech-2026/), capital is arriving faster than the companies that can absorb it. CSG sits on the other side of that gap: a buyer with cash, a listed currency, and a record €44 billion of backlog and pipeline.

## Europe's missing inventory

The demand side is already funded. Europe's IRIS2 sovereign constellation is moving from tender to contract, national governments are ordering their own observation satellites, and the continent's launch cadence remains capped by a single rocket's schedule. Ariane 6 has flown six missions this year after a turbopump anomaly trimmed the manifest.

What Europe lacks is factories. North American primes and manufacturers dominate the order books for LEO communications satellites, and Europe's own capacity is scattered across a handful of builders. A partner with MDA's production line, a doubled Montreal floor, and a robotics heritage that nobody else can match is exactly what a defence group would want on its side.

The arithmetic CSG is pricing is simple. It expects the global space economy to nearly triple, to roughly $1.8 trillion by 2035\. Satellite systems, robotics and Earth-observation analytics all sit inside that curve, and the revenue is contracted years ahead. MDA's CAD 4 billion backlog converts to cash on a schedule that a €7.4 billion defence group can underwrite.

The open question is where the metal gets bent. A joint European plant would give CSG a domestic supply line and MDA a new customer bloc. Neither has committed to a site.

## The consolidation nobody priced

Space manufacturing is consolidating faster than launch. MDA is doing it from Canada, buying its way into the U.S. and Europe. CSG is doing it from Prague, buying its way into Canada.

The limit is the same on both sides. A minority stake buys influence, not control. CSG's 9.5% cannot set MDA's strategy. What it buys is a seat, a supply channel, and a claim on future cooperation.

For MDA, a strategic shareholder with defence customers is useful, and a European factory would widen the customer base beyond Ottawa and Washington. It also raises a question the company has not had to answer before: whether the new capital makes MDA more European, or simply more contested between allied buyers.

MDA's own balance sheet gives it room. A net cash position, a $299 million cushion at the last count, and shares that analysts still call cheap against space peers. CSG carries €2.9 billion of net debt at 1.6x EBITDA. The two are comfortable partners for now.

🎯

CSG's $434 million buys 9.5% of MDA and a first foothold in orbit — influence, not control.

MDA's 30%+ growth and CAD 4 billion backlog are the real asset; the stake is a priced option on European manufacturing.

Watch for a joint European facility and a follow-on stake. 9.5% reads as a starting position, not a destination.
