José Ignacio Ruiz keeps returning to one number: 40 years. That is how long, he says, the business of managing a company's energy bill has gone without a real technology layer. The invoice arrives once a month. Someone checks it by hand, argues about it over email, and files it. Nobody knows what the next one will cost until it lands.

Ruiz is chief executive of Linkener, a Valencia company founded in 2011 that sells an Intelligent Energy Management System, or SIGE. Proprietary remote meters sit at the customer's site and feed consumption data into software that validates bills, analyses supply contracts, and flags anomalies. On 19 October, Linkener closed a €7.5 million round led by Klima, the energy transition fund of Alantra, with existing investor GoHub Ventures remaining on the cap table.

## The monthly bill is a bad interface

The pitch is operational before it is environmental. A mid-sized Spanish company buys electricity on a contract it rarely renegotiates, pays a bill it cannot fully reconstruct, and discovers overcharges months later. Linkener's software turns the meter feed and the invoice into a single timeline, then sends alerts when consumption or pricing drifts from the contract.

The company says monitoring and control can cut consumption costs by 20% in the services sector. That figure is Linkener's own estimate, not an audited average, and it depends on the site. The more defensible claim is structural: 10,000 supply points generate enough billing data to make the software useful even before any hardware upgrade.

Those supply points also explain why an investor would fund consolidation rather than another dashboard.

## What €7.5 million buys

The round is small for a growth company and specific in purpose. Linkener will spend it on proprietary AI models that automate bill processing, detect anomalies, and rank savings opportunities, and on acquisitions of products or companies that add capabilities it does not want to build. The company has completed more than 400 solar photovoltaic and battery storage projects, work that turns an identified saving into an installed asset.

Scale, not the cheque, is the asset. Linkener reports more than 2,000 customers across 10,000 supply points, managing 1.7 TWh of annual consumption. Dealroom puts that volume in perspective: roughly the electricity demand of a city of 400,000 people.

| Metric | Reported level |
| ------------------------------ | ---------------- |
| **Customers** | 2,000+ |
| **Supply points** | 10,000 |
| **Energy managed** | 1.7 TWh per year |
| **Solar and storage projects** | 400+ in Spain |

## A fund that buys platforms, not point products

Klima is not a generalist climate fund. It is the energy transition vehicle of Alantra, sponsored with Enagás, and this is its 11th investment from a €210 million first fund backed by the European Investment Fund, a Canadian pension fund, and Axis ICO. Its portfolio already includes GridBeyond for smart energy management, Dexter Energy for renewable forecasting, Echandia for maritime batteries, and Meteomatics for weather intelligence.

That collection matters for Linkener. A roll-up needs targets that plug into an existing customer base, not a portfolio of unrelated science projects. Linkener's 2,000 customers are the distribution channel; the acquired products are the upsell.

🎯

The €7.5 million is a consolidation mandate, not a product bet.

Linkener's 10,000 supply points are the distribution asset that makes acquisitions cheaper to integrate.

The company's 20% savings claim is a sales estimate; the verified asset is the metering and billing data behind it.

## The roll-up test

Energy management for small and mid-sized businesses is a services market dressed as software. Contracts are local, sales cycles are relationship-driven, and much of the work is still done by consultancies and brokers. That fragmentation is exactly what Klima is underwriting. It is also the reason roll-ups in this category tend to disappoint.

Buying a small consultancy adds customers and revenue, but it also adds people, legacy billing systems, and whatever margin the founder was willing to accept. Software multiples do not transfer cleanly to labour-heavy service revenue. Linkener will have to show that acquired books can be migrated onto its platform without losing the accounts that came with them.

The company has one advantage that pure software roll-ups lack. Its meters and its engineering team let it capture value after the audit: a detected saving becomes a solar installation, a battery, or a renegotiated contract. Each step produces new data and another reason for the customer to stay.

The arithmetic is unforgiving at this size. A €7.5 million round split between product work and acquisitions leaves room for a handful of small deals, not a campaign. Each target has to bring either a software capability that would take a year to build or a book of customers that would take two years to win. Paying for both in the same deal is where roll-up premiums usually go wrong.

## Why the meter is the moat

Most energy-management software starts with a bill. Linkener starts with a meter. Its proprietary telemetry hardware captures interval data at the customer's site, which means the software sees consumption before the utility's invoice arrives. That timing matters. A bill can be wrong in several places at once: power terms, network charges, taxes, and the multipliers attached to each. Validation is where the first savings appear.

The hardware also creates a cost that pure software companies avoid. Every new site needs an installation, a connection, and maintenance. Linkener's €7.5 million has to cover meters and AI models at the same time, which limits how fast it can buy companies and still integrate them.

Competition is crowding the same data layer. GridBeyond, also in Klima's portfolio, sells demand-side flexibility to larger industrial sites. Dexter Energy forecasts renewable output for traders and asset owners. Consultancies and brokers still handle contract negotiation for smaller firms. Linkener's differentiator is the combination: an owned meter, a billing workflow, and an engineering team that can install the solar or battery a saving implies.

Utilities and meter operators are digitising too. If half-hourly data becomes a commodity that every supplier hands over in a clean format, the meter stops being a moat and the business reduces to workflow and switching costs. That is the outcome Linkener's acquisition strategy is meant to pre-empt: own more of the customer's energy workflow before the data advantage erodes.

## What has to be true by 2028

### Will Linkener turn a services roll-up into a software platform?

🔮

**By the end of 2028, Linkener will have acquired at least two companies and will manage more than 3 TWh of annual consumption.**

Probability: 55% — the mandate and the customer base are in place; the open variable is integration speed, not capital.

#### ✅ Arguments for

Klima has a stated acquisition thesis and a portfolio of adjacent energy-software assets.

Linkener's 10,000 supply points give an acquired product immediate distribution.

**Confirmation criteria:** a disclosed acquisition within 12 months and growth in managed TWh beyond 2.5\.

#### ❌ Arguments against

€7.5 million funds a few small acquisitions at most, and integration consumes management attention.

Energy services revenue carries lower margins than software, which can dilute the platform story.

**Falsification criteria:** no acquisition announced by the end of 2027, or managed volume flat at 1.7 TWh.

Spain's business energy market is fragmented enough to consolidate and small enough that a €7.5 million cheque can matter. Klima is betting that Linkener's meters, bills, and customer list are a cheaper route to scale than building each product in-house. The next two years will show whether that route ends in a platform or a larger consultancy.
