## The cost asymmetry that justified a $3.4B valuation

Defence economics broke when cheap attack drones met expensive interceptors. A single Patriot-class round runs past $1 million. A mass-produced one-way attack drone costs a few thousand dollars. Every engagement stretches that gap, and attrition favours whoever produces cheaper.

Russia's Alabuga facility reportedly makes roughly 5,100 Shahed-type drones a month. A defender spending $1 million per interception burns capital faster than the attacker spends production capacity. The ratio starts near 50:1.

It compressed that ratio to somewhere near 1:1 or 2:1.

Skyhammer is a turbojet-powered interceptor weighing 18 kilograms. It reaches 700 km/h, carries a 30-kilometre engagement range, and locks on via an onboard X-band active radar seeker. The blast-fragmentation warhead fits the job: just enough explosive to trigger the target's payload through sympathetic detonation, a technique Barrett described as using the incoming drone's own fuel against itself.

Unit cost is the entire thesis. Industry estimates put Skyhammer at £20,000-30,000 — roughly $27,000-40,500\. The company frames it as 1-2% of a traditional interceptor. Independent validation of that number is still pending; the question is whether full-scale production holds it.

## From prototype to a factory that replaces a stockpile

Skyhammer development began in January 2025, with the first flight test six weeks later. Weekly testing followed — an iteration pace closer to software than to missile prime culture. Chris Sylvan, co-founder and chief commercial officer, told Janes that effectiveness across all live testing and operational activity stands at 70 percent.

That velocity convinced the money. After emerging from stealth with roughly $100M at a $400M valuation, the company raised a $200M Series B at $1.3B in April 2026, weeks after the MoD agreed to buy hundreds of Skyhammer units under a multi-million-pound contract. First deliveries followed in May.

The Series C now funds the critical industrial step: completing and scaling the currently under-construction Norfolk facility to produce 2,500 interceptors a month by March 2027\. That target is roughly half the current Shahed production rate, aiming to be achieved from this single British site once fully operational.

## Starhammer and the second layer of the stack

Skyhammer handles the high-volume drone tier. Starhammer takes the fast tier: a Mach-2, rocket-powered interceptor aimed at cruise missiles, scheduled for 2027\. Its propulsion comes from Nightstar, the company's solid rocket motor programme, with a Norfolk facility being built as what Dealroom calls Europe's largest SRM factory.

The company was co-founded by Grant Shapps, a former UK defence secretary. He initially served as board chair but stepped down from the position in April 2026 following a review by an ethics watchdog. Steven Barrett, a Cambridge and MIT aerospace professor, is CEO. The structure reads like an intentional template for European defence scale-up: academic in command, foundational political capital, and venture money underneath.

That quote from the lead investor hides the competitive question. Anduril, Quantum Systems, Neros and traditional primes are all chasing the same affordable-mass thesis. Cambridge's differentiation is the interceptor itself — a kinetic, air-launched effect with a full sensor stack, competing against a market where borders between jamming, nets and missiles keep blurring. Its bet sits on the kinetic side of that divide, competing on unit cost rather than on electronic-warfare cleverness.

## What the valuation does and does not prove

Total funding of $630M in under two years makes Cambridge one of the fastest-capitalising defence startups in European history. But a valuation is a forward price; the factory is the real test. Reaching 2,500 units a month requires manufacturing discipline that most missile programmes never achieve, and the cost-per-unit claim only holds if the Norfolk line runs at that tempo.

If Norfolk delivers, the counter-drone market's reported run from $2.6 billion in 2025 toward roughly $23 billion by 2035 stops being a forecast and becomes an order book.
