David Roberts spent four years building a 500-kilogram robot that nobody was sure would work outside a European training ground. Last month, eight of them ran nonstop for six days in the Mojave Desert, sharing data with American, Australian, Canadian, and New Zealand forces at a scale none of those armies had attempted before.

🎯

**8 GEREON UGVs deployed across 5 allied nations, 6 continuous desert days, 100+ technologies tested**

Project Convergence-Capstone 6 was the largest experiment in the U.S. Army's modernization campaign. Held at the National Training Center in Fort Irwin, California, from July 20 to 29, 2026, it brought together forces from the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, and New Zealand to validate the Army's Next Generation Command and Control architecture. More than 100 emerging battlefield technologies were tested under conditions designed to simulate real combat rather than a controlled demonstration.

ARX Robotics UK, the British subsidiary of the German defence-tech startup, embedded its GEREON unmanned ground vehicles directly with the UK's Experimentation and Trials Group, 11 Brigade, and 3rd Deep Recce Strike Brigade. It marked the first time the company participated in both the combat validation and experimentation portions of the exercise simultaneously.

## What the Robots Did

The platform supported six distinct mission types across the exercise: reconnaissance, counter-UAS, electronic warfare, fires coordination, logistics resupply, and casualty evacuation. The vehicles operated across three UK experimentation lines, with data flowing from sub-unit level sensors through TAK-compatible systems and SAPIENT into brigade and divisional headquarters, and onward to the Allied Rapid Reaction Corps' Joint Air-Ground Integration Cell.

That integration chain matters more than any single capability. Defence robotics companies have spent years demonstrating individual platforms in isolation. PC-C6 tested whether those platforms could feed a multinational command structure in real time, under electronic warfare conditions, across a 100-kilometer desert range.

## The Power Problem Nobody Talks About

The exercise exposed one of the central challenges in deploying autonomous systems at scale: energy. GEREON's robotic control system was charged using a Plasan ATeMM mobile energy platform, and the trials tested its interaction with the British Army's newly developed hybrid support vehicle. Keeping eight robots running around the clock in desert heat, with temperatures exceeding 45 degrees Celsius, requires a logistics chain that most armies have not yet built.

Robots that run out of power in a forward area become dead weight. The ATeMM platform represents one approach: a modular, transportable energy source that can be deployed alongside robotic fleets without requiring dedicated fuel infrastructure. The PC-C6 trials generated the operational data needed to size that infrastructure correctly.

## Why This Matters for European Defence

The company is backed by the NATO Innovation Fund and has deployed systems across several European armed forces. Its GEREON fleet is the largest Western-built UGV fleet currently in operational use. Participation at PC-C6 was not a demonstration exercise. It was a validation of whether a European startup's platform could integrate into the most complex multinational land warfare experiment the U.S. Army has ever conducted.

The answer, according to David Roberts, is yes. "Project Convergence-Capstone 6 demonstrated that our systems are ready to operate at scale as part of a wider allied force, rather than as standalone technology," he said. "This is an important step in ARX's growing activity in the United States. It showed that our common, software-defined platform can be deployed across multiple missions, integrated rapidly with partner technologies and connected into allied operational networks."

"Software-defined platform" is the key phrase. The system is not a hardware platform that happens to have software attached. Its Mithra operating system is the core product: an AI-powered autonomy stack that can be deployed across different hardware configurations. The hardware is the commodity layer. The software is the strategic asset.

The company is investing £45 million in UK manufacturing and R&D, creating sovereign industrial capability through partnerships with British defence technology companies.

## The Integration Test That Matters

Colonel Jim Howard OBE, Commander of the British Army's Experimentation and Trials Group, framed the exercise in terms that defence procurement officers will recognise: "Project Convergence-Capstone 6 provides a valuable opportunity to test how the British Army integrates autonomous and uncrewed systems into land operations alongside existing networks and capabilities, within a multinational corps-level event. This experimentation is central to delivering the Chief of the General Staff's 20-40-40 vision and understanding how autonomous systems can generate greater mass, reach and operational effect."

The 20-40-40 vision refers to the British Army's force structure target: 20% uncrewed systems, 40% augmented by AI, and 40% traditional manned platforms. PC-C6 was the first large-scale test of whether that ratio can actually work in a multinational context.

### What happens to European defence-tech valuations if PC-C6 data drives U.S. Army procurement?

🔮

**European defence-tech startups that demonstrate NATO interoperability at exercises like PC-C6 will command premium valuations in 2027-2028\. The integration capability, not the hardware, is the moat.**

Probability: 65% — PC-C6 validation data directly informs acquisition decisions, and ARX's software-defined approach positions it ahead of prime contractors still building hardware-first architectures.

#### 🟢 Optimistic scenario (40%)

ARX Robotics secures a major U.S. Army contract. PC-C6 validation data directly informs acquisition decisions. UK manufacturing base provides allied production capacity.

**Implications:** ARX becomes the first European defence-tech startup to win a U.S. Army UGV programme of record, validating the software-defined platform thesis.

#### 🟡 Base-case scenario (35%)

European defence integration accelerates. PC-C6 results drive UK and European allies to increase procurement. ARX's joint venture with Roboneers scales production.

**Implications:** The £45 million UK investment creates sovereign manufacturing capability that attracts additional European defence contracts across NATO.

#### 🔴 Pessimistic scenario (25%)

Competing platforms close the gap. Larger defence primes accelerate their own autonomous ground vehicle programmes. ARX's first-mover advantage in multinational integration erodes.

**Implications:** Prime contractors offer similar software-defined architectures with deeper pockets and existing procurement relationships, compressing ARX's window.

## Signals to Watch

📊

**Key signals to track**

U.S. Army response to PC-C6 findings (Q4 2026) — will autonomous ground systems move from experimentation to acquisition?

ARX Robotics pipeline of European defence contracts through NATO Innovation Fund channels — can the company sustain growth beyond the UK?

British Army progress toward 20-40-40 force structure target — what pace of uncrewed system procurement does this set across NATO?

As we wrote in [August](https://nexi.fund/arx-robotics-gereon-2026), ARX Robotics' GEREON platform had already demonstrated its capability in European training environments. PC-C6 added something different: proof that the platform works at multinational scale, under realistic combat conditions, integrated into allied command structures. That is the gap between a promising startup and a defence prime in the making.
